Event Description

Have you ever wondered what was going on when you saw a crowd of old Chinese guys on the street, leaning over each other in a tight circle, straining to get a glimpse of the action? What are they looking at? What is all the loud, table banging about? Why are they concentrating so hard?
More than likely they are playing 象棋 Xiàngqí (Chinese chess) .The game is one of strategy, where two players battle each other in a representation of a war between two armies. The object is to capture your opponent’s 将jiàng (general). There are also cannons, chariots, soldiers, elephants, horses and advisors.
At That’s Mandarin we will be teaching you the basics of the game so that you can join the guys and play a round next time you see them in your local 公园. Another great advantage to learning how to play象棋, is being able to buy a set to take home and show your family and friend your new found mad China skills.
