Mahjong Games Night @ That

Mahjong Games Night @ That's Mandarin

Hosted by: That's Mandarin

Event Description

Mahjong 麻將(Májiàng) is often compared to card games of skill, strategy and chance. A game with 136 tiles marked with a combination of Chinese characters and symbols, players are dealt a hand of 13 tiles and then have to steal a 14th to make winning “hands” as in a card game. This fun and popular game goes far beyond the Chinese mainland borders. It is the most played game in Japan, popular in Korea and first made a splash in the U.S. in 1920! Today, there is an American Mah Jong Association which hosts tournaments all across North America.
Interesting fact: Mahjong was banned by the Chinese government in 1949 when they made gambling illegal. Today, gambling is still illegal in China but mahjong has regained popularity and researches have even shed light on the effects of mahjong on preventing and treating dementia!
That’s Mandarin will teach you the basics of the game as you learn new vocabulary and meet awesome people. There will be fruit and beer as well as tea and coffee for everyone and we welcome you to invite your friends and make a night of it.
