    lol, in other words they believed that not committing suicide was in fact suicide, while committing suicide was "accepting what was being offered".

    The lolliest part of heavens gate though was that they believed they could teleport their souls into an alien spacecraft which was cloaked and riding along in the tail of the hale-bopp comet. This was based on their ancient astronaut beliefs. (fucked up)

    I can imagine being caught up with this idea aged 14..if promoted by a charismatic leader. It sounds pretty exciting, after all. I think there is something extra sad and tragic about mass suicides, especially ones where the people have been duped into thinking they will be beginning a shiny new life immediately afterward.
