Obviously, after whoever-it-was-that-carved-it-out was finished, an "enclosure" remained. These are the walls surrounding what is now the pit, therein the Sphinx lies.

The walls of these pits show evidence of erosion, caused by rainfall.

Robert Schoch, doctor in geology at Boston University, jumped into the matter and has come to an interesting conclusion, based on his scientific research:

For erosion of this type to occur, it needs to rain for at least a few centuries on end. This has not happened on the Giza plateau since roughly 5000 before Christ - as soil sample evidence shows that there has been a climatic change in this region which came to an end around 5000 before Christ, initiated around 10,500 before Christ.

Exact cardinal alignment: just like the pyramids of the Giza plateau, the Sphinx is perfectly aligned according to the cardinal points. Its gaze is exactly due east.

This might lead to a link to the "Orion Correlation Theory", as constructed by Robert Bauval: the Giza pyramids exactly mirroring the three belt stars of the constellation of Orion. But only during one epoch: 10,500 before Christ.

We can take then this further:

The Sphinx, obviously being a lionesque figure, gazes due east. If the Giza pyramids mirror the three stars of Orion's belt, at 10,500 before Christ.. then.. let's look at which Zodiacal sign the Sphinx would gaze at when we take a look at which Zodiacal sign was on the rise during 10,500 before Christ.. and that is the constellation of Leo.

It should be obvious that the core body of what is now the Sphinx was carved out way before 2500 before Christ, because the water erosion evidence shows that. But when was it carved out, and by who, and why?
