I wonder, do Chinese HAVE to eat lunch at 12 and dinner at 18.30? If you eat 1 hour later will you starve?

Just came back from MIT lecture which took place at 12pm and it seemed liked 80% of the Chinese there were with lunch boxes eating in front of the professor, and not only students but also the teaching staff.

Some day i asked asked a girl out for dinner, and she said "ok lets meet at 6.30pm?" i said "i just finish my class then, so lets meet at 8pm?" and she was like "no, it is soooooo late".

Seriously, it is a real question - what is this fixation on eating at the same time?

LOL, u were trying to date her . so 6:30 is a better time for u to treat her.

sometimes peoeple jsut use it as an execuse to get enough time to dress up , before meet u .

but for students , they have fixed class time . so the lunch time should be fixed too.

what's the MIT lecture?  where is it ?

Hahahahaha ... although I had wondered about the same thing, I am also sure that this is not a "Chinese only" thing ... back in high school, we started dinner at 5:15 sharp (not sure about lunch), and in Uni, we normally had lunch around 12:30, and dinner at 5:30 ... both were in Brisbane Australia ..

However, having worked for many years and married for a few, I have got used to finish work, go home, cook dinner, then eat around 7:30 or 8, so when I first came to live here, I also wondered how can people have dinner so early?

For a long time, my in-laws actually thought that I was lazy (or simply refused to cook for their daughter) only because we did not start dinner around 6:30 or even 7:00 ...

My only explanation is that back when the country was more communist than socialist, or semi-capitalist, most people finished work on time, and traffic back then was not so chaotic as now, so they can arrive home within a relatively short time, cook dinner, and then start dinner before 新闻联播!

Chinese people doesn´t joke about food and money....

If you eat rice, tofu, noodles with some little pieces of meat, you will probably feel starved after some hours (just try it)... eating steaks, potatoes, pizzas and other huge shits, pretty sure they can control themselves, and wait half hour....

(continued) ... oh, the common phrase they like to use is "science" (or scientific) ... I have often heard phrases such as "it is not scientific to eat dinner three hours within sleep hours", and a lot of them do go to bed around 10, so which might (or might not) explain why they have dinner so early ...

people all get hungary at lunch time . better to dismiss the meeting before u see everyone's sleepy and hungary eyes.

regular eating habbit is good for health .

r u a work maniac?  u pobably have a different time schedule from most Chinese here.

or r u saying that Chinese put eating at 1st. work second?

I dont knwo what r u trying to imply here . cos obviously it's not necessary to discuss everyone's eating habbit here .
