China Central Television (CCTV) issued a regulation a few days ago, requiring all sports hosts and reporters stop using foreign abbreviations like NBA and CBA in any TV programs or interviews and translating the foreign terms into Chinese when they are mentione.
Some basketball fans watched a host from CCTV-5 used the Chinese term of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) instead of CBA in the basketball program last Sunday.
Another CCTV host who declined to be named said that he didn’t know why CCTV made the regulation.
Some local broadcasting stations like Jilin TV and Beijing TV also received the notificationed.
A TV host from Jinlin TV explained that if reporters or hosts have to use the abbreviation, they should add the Chinese translation right afterwards.
Yu Jia, a sports commentator with CCTV said it’s not too difficult to adapt to the new regulation, as he has already avoided using abbreviations in his show.
