Three books at the same time:
John Berger 's The Stoyteller ; Umberto Eco's Misreading; Eric Rohmer‘s Contes des 4 Saisons
but all translated into Chinese.
Carlos，u are talking about Kuang Ren Ri Ji 狂人日记。
I would like to know which translated version are u reading, who is the translator? Gladys?
Lu xun 's novels are not the style what i like, too much symbolism and impede the story telling. Prefer his brother, Zhouzuoren.
But there is one i do like from Lu xun, Shang Shi. 伤逝
Carlos, um um, check it, seems quite new. I would like to read his prose in English, would be interesting!
"Being Zen"...and "The ending of the time"
Garcia Marquez is great! one of my favorite! especially his Love in the time of Cholera , I would like to read it one day in Spanish, too....
Currently trying to finish War and Peace and O Ran (Welsh-language fiction).
Will be moving onto The Count of Monte Cristo afterwards. (I'm trying to fill in gaps in my reading of classic novels!)
I am reading research papers 6-10,000 words in length. Over 200 of them. :-(
Peter, I am reading research paper,too, :(
about pesticide and infertility........... :(
I re-read "1984" once a year to keep it fresh.
Cheers for putting "The Count of Monte Cristo" on your list. But be forewarned: the book's entire midsection is excised from the films and can be grueling at times.
In terms of classics, I recently tackled Dostoyevsky's "The Brothers Karamazov," Austen's "Pride and Predjudice" and Huxley's "Brave New World."
Currently reading a book on public speaking, Barbara Tuchman's "Stilwell and the American Experience in China" and and Adams' "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy."
Nabokov is great, but i dont know why my favorite is his Pnin.
Anyone like Raymond Carver? I am writing an article about him.
Winnie, seems that book is quite popular amongs white collar girls... two of my friends talked to me about it months ago.
I've read Raymond Carver's "Cathedral." Full of booze and lonliness.
After read Malcolm Gladwell and , on the way reading his second novel , shamely wasn't that good as same as the other two. So quite slowly now...
Also, read a few chapter of by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Really interesting...
Personally, quite enjoy the book which could inspirt you with a difference conception, otherwise, felt a bit waste time and it won't keep long...and won't make you knowledgeable.
@Pete, actually I cried during reading Cathedral, but yes, I am a easy cry-er.
@TonyDice, Thanks for providing such important information. I've no idea about it before i saw u post, truely....I checked...and gained a lot of interesting information, and help to improve a lot the article, thanks thanks thansk :)
Fin, for me, Les Rêveries Du Promeneur Solitaire could also be attached high importance in literture extend. I like Rousseau, but more take him as a wonderful writer.
Quite happy to see so many post here talking about passion on philosophy...since I have the same passion too :) I love postmodernism works , such as Lacan, Foucault and Derrida. also some structuralism like the just pass-away Levi-Strauss.
And Foxxy, La sombra del viento, excellent novel. I saw it months ago then I bought Safon's another novel, Angle's Game. But seems not as good as the first one, but i havnt finished it yet.
Thansk Yadan, I 've read the book already.
Recently Stephen King wrote an article about Carver's life in NYT.
Seems every 2 years, people start to talk about Ray once again, but what we talk about changed slightly. Anyway, I like King's article.
Winne, which book? 不抱怨的世界？I'd love to read it, but I guess I can borrow from my flatmate. Thanks :)
i can't understand english ...
no matter what english novels
"if this is history of Song dynasty" a historical book about Song dynasty of China for common persons
a book on Chinse astrology...
He is quite a character, symbolizing a special ideology among a group of special youth in a special time in Beijing. People call them Da Yuan Zi Di大院子弟，whoes parents are normally high ranking army officials after 1949. They lived and grow up together in a community, grow up a unique personality or mentality mixed with traditonal/local beijing culture (痞子气，hard to explain in Chinese) and a belief in Mao, CPC, and culture revolution.
They once were the most powerful kids in beijing, fighting around the street, and have most access to new culture things and event. But after 1977, some of them become lost in the new society, can't move on, using sarcastic way to understand the world...
If u are interested in culture revolution and beijing mentality, that's quite good to approach to Wang Shuo. And but the way, his technic in literture is quite special, too. Sarcastic with sadness.
I've only read 看上去很美，顽主and 千岁寒，not sure about urs. I like 看上去很美.
PS. He influence the movies of Feng Xiao Gang, Jiang Wen and Zhang Yang quite a lot. I like the movie 看上去很美，too. If u are interested in Wangshuo, u can take a look at the movies redirected from his novels first..then decide by urself~
By the way, movie 阳光灿烂的日子（In the Heat of the Sun, directed by 姜文），also from Wang Shuo's short story (动物凶猛), is really an exellent movie for me.
