WeLiveInBeijing Resurrection

Posted by WeLiveInBeijing on 29. Jul 2013

As many of you already know, WeLiveInBeijing.com has been down for weeks, and we've received many questions on what's going on and that's what this post will answer.

What happened?

Long story short; Our hosting company TOTOIDC's servers became unable to reach affecting all their clients. None of their employees has been possible to reach and our contacts has vanished. All we know is that this is completely unacceptable for all clients affected, and that a lot of data has been lost.

UPDATE: We've got hold of a person who can tell us that the whole server facility is currently locked down by the police, and we need to wait until their work is done before we can get access to our server. The police investegation has nothing to do with our server/website in specific.

UPDATE 2: The police are now done doing whatever, and it looks like we'll gain access to the server in a few weeks.

The solution?

We've decided to pull the data from our most recent backup out from China. This will naturally affect the speed as the data has to travel further, but our tests shows that the speed and response time is still very good and we'll do some technical tweaks in time to improve it even more for people who live in China.

How does this affect me?

The backup we recover from is not the daily backup from our server at TOTOIDC, but an external server we set up in Tianjin for "worst-case" scenario. This runs once a month and doesn't cover everything, unfortunately. What's lost:

  • Most photos and uploaded images from 2009-2010 (unless we gain access to the server again)
  • All classified listings
  • All user-generated content after May 28 2013

What's next?

WeLiveInBeijing is not a closed chapter, and we're determined to return as one of the most popular websites for people living in Beijing.

How can I help

We're more than happy to receive your ideas, proposals and contributions whether you're media, photographer, event promoter, club owner, agent, businessman, creative soul or just dedicated member.
