Resolutions: 10 Ways to Get Motivated

Sometimes we get into such a slump that even thinking about making positive changes seems too difficult. Here are 10 ways to jumpstart your motivation.

Simplify. Sometimes slumps are caused by having too much stuff going on in your life. It's difficult to maintain energy and focus if you're trying to do too many things. Choose one goal, for now, and focus on it completely. Switch to another goal after you've accomplished your first one.

Find Inspiration. A good source of inspiration is others who have already achieved what you want to accomplish. Read a blog or books by someone in the field. Google your goal and read success stories.

Get Excited. After finding inspiration from others, build on that excitement. Talk to friends or family members about your goal and why it's important to you. Visualize what it would be like to be successful.

Build Anticipation. Don’t start right away. Set a date in the future—a week or two, or even a month. Mark it on the calendar. Get excited about that date. Make it the most important date in your life. In the meantime, start writing a simple plan. By delaying your start, you are building anticipation and preparing yourself to be focused and energized.

Think About it Daily. Post your goal on your wall or computer. Post it at home at work, or any place where you spend a lot of time. Send yourself reminders through automated SMS services (such as the free SMS reminder in the Google Calendar). Post pictures, as well as words, that represent your goal. Most of all, think about the benefits, not the challenges.

Get Support. It’s hard to accomplish something alone. Share your goal with trusted friends who will keep you on track. Join an online group or forum and talk with others who have the same goal. Tell a trusted friend that you might call them in the future for some re-motivation.

Respect Yin and Yang. Motivation comes and goes. When you feel uncertain, go back and find inspiration, get excited and get some support until your motivation comes back.

Start Small. Set smaller goals that relate to your larger goal that you know you can commit to now. If you want to exercise, for example, don't start out with intense workouts five days a week. Start with a 2-minute exercise, even if that sounds wimpy. Want to wake up early? Don’t think start waking at 5am tomorrow. Start out with waking up 10 minutes earlier for a week. Commit to it, and stick to it.

Build on Success. If you start out small, you'll earn the benefit of having accomplished what you planned to do. Small successes increase motivation because it reinforces that you are getting somewhere. You’ll feel successful and good about yourself. Take that successful feeling and commit to the next step.

Replace Negative Thoughts with Positive Ones. Start small by monitoring your thoughts for a few days and recognizing the negative self-talk you feed yourself—which is really what’s causing your slump. After that, start squashing the negative thoughts (like a bug) and replacing them with positive ones. “This is too hard...” Squash. “I can do this!" It sounds corny, but just try it.
