One Last Fix

BEIJING, Mar 3 - Think the winter sports season is over with the rise in mercury?

Not quite.

The 1st Annual Snow Jam, a three-day weekend winter sports retreat, is scheduled to go down on the weekend of March 12-14 at the Duolemeidi Ski Resort, located about four hours north of Beijing in Chongli County.

"We've added all the ingredients a proper snowjam needs," said event organizer Marcel van Wieringen of 360 Snow Tours. "Parties, riding and entertainment."

In addition to skiing and snowboarding, the event billed as "Party on the Mountains" features a snow tube race ("It's a simple concept: grab a snow tube, run, jump and the first one down wins"), a park clinic hosted by Semi-Pro rider Bobby Carleo and a jump contest in which all are invited to perform their best tricks for their chance to win either skis or a snowboard provided by event sponsor Nordica.

A booze-filled bus, stopping in both Wudaokou and the North Gate of Worker's Stadium, gets you there and back.

Beginners are welcome, too, with the provision of free lessons while the more experienced go take cracks at the jump park, hit one of the park's eight slopes or test out new brands at the Nordica expo stand.

Nightfall brings a party at the resort hotel, which has been converted into a proper club, replete with "jokingly-low drink prices" and DJ Sam Pearson manning the decks.

"I wanted to set something like this up since last season, but didn't have the time and right promotional support to launch," said van Wieringen.

Earlier this season, after joining forces with PR and brand consultancy firm Rule42 over a few beers, a deal was discussed and later sealed. Hopefully it'll turn into a regular event a la SnowBorn, said Wieringen, with well-known bands and DJs.

"But we'll always keep the focus on the average rider," he added. "We'd like to make it affordable and organize activities for all to participate."

Tickets for this event range from 998-1888 RMB, with a VIP package providing 5-star hotel access, gear rentals and other enhanced amenities.

And as far as the coming of spring is concerned, it shouldn't be a problem, said van Wieringen, citing the resort's northern location as a primary factor. "Actually, the conditions will be better. And during the day, we can all enjoy some really nice sun on our faces."
