Luka Rocco Magnotta, the 29-year-old sought by Montreal police in connection with a suspected homicide linked to the mailing of body parts to political offices, is a self-described model and adult film actor with a sprawling online presence.

Police issued a Canada-wide warrant for Magnotta on May 30 but believe he may have fled Canada.

Originally from Toronto, Magnotta has been renting a $490-a-month furnished apartment in a working-class neighbourhood of Montreal for four months. Police believe the body parts belong to a man killed in that apartment.

Magnotta changed his name from Eric Clinton Kirk Newman on Aug. 12, 2006.

He has also gone by the name Vladimir Romanov, among others. His multiple identities were confusing enough that even Montreal police originally identified him as "Rocco Luka," when naming him as a suspect in the death and dismemberment of a man who remains unidentified days after a torso was found in a suitcase near the apartment building where Magnotta lived.

Montreal police have said Magnotta wasn't known to them, but he does have a criminal record in Ontario.

In 2005, he was convicted on four counts of fraud and served 16 days in pre-trial custody. He was given a further nine-month conditional sentence and 12 months' probation.

Magnotta was also the subject of online rumours about possible ties to Karla Homolka. But in 2007, Magnotta spoke to the Toronto Sun's Joe Warmington and denied internet rumours linking him to teen killer Paul Bernardo's ex-wife. He asserted he had never even met Homolka.

Warmington told Carol Off of CBC's As it Happens that Magnotta didn't make much sense during their 2007 interview.

"It was one of those situations where you realize somebody is not all there," Warmington said. "I tried to be respectful and maybe even get some help – but he had a story to tell and we let him tell it.

"He talked about somebody killing his dog, and he talked about being in great demand as an escort, a male escort, that kind of thing."

Warmington said he will never forget the young man he spoke to who was "clearly troubled, and borderline delusional — at the same time friendly, somebody you kind of felt sorry for, if you will."

Warmington said he thought there was a chance Magnotta had made up the Homolka rumours himself to gain attention.

"I don't rule out anything else, but I don't have any evidence that he had anything to do with Karla Homolka at any point."

Online searches for Luka Rocco Magnotta turn up numerous bizarre and disturbing posts.

The Luka Magnotta "official" website contains photos as well as rants about media propaganda, the problems with the judicial system and cyber stalking.

In response to what he refers to as haters and stalkers on the internet, Magnotta wrote: "I have no obsession with the limelight — the reality is, I refuse to give interviews and I have turned down countless interviewers and media requests to appear.… Having appeared in magazines/films years ago does not constitute an unhealthy obsession with the limelight. Most people who spend all their time online belittling others probably have no life as is evident."

In spite of this, Magnotta twice posed for Fab, a Toronto-based magazine focused on the city's gay scene. Magnotta posed in shirtless, racy photo shoots for the magazine in 2005 and again in 2007, using different names each time. For one shoot he used the name "Luca," then two years later appearing using the name "Jimmy."

Xtra, another publication covering Toronto's gay scene, published a story on May 31 quoting a woman who claimed to have dated Magnotta for about a month in 2006. Identified only as "Julie," the woman told the magazine the relationship was a difficult one, and said Magnotta had two personalities: one quiet and reserved, the other fame-seeking and obsessed with serial killers.

Magnotta was accused online of videotaping himself killing kittens and posting it to the internet but he has denied those allegations.

An online article about "How to disappear completely and never be found" appears to have been posted by Magnotta. The article shares a six-step process for escaping and shedding one's identity.

The author cautions that making a decision to disappear is "not an undertaking to be entered into lightly" and says "a minimum of four months is really necessary to successfully carry out the heroic actions necessary to leave your old life behind."

There is also a blog site on the internet titled Necrophilia Serial Killer Luka Magnotta, featuring photos of Magnotta and thoughts on necrophilia.

"It's not cool to the world being a necrophiliac. It's bloody lonely. But I don't really care, I have never cared what people thought of me, most people are judgmental idiots," the author wrote.

A posting on a website called Orato, which bills itself as a forum where people can speak from experience, a citizen journalist named Luka Magnotta wrote a post in 2007 about overcoming mental illness.

The author says he had a traumatic childhood and experimented with drugs and alcohol in his teen years, and wound up being hospitalized for a "depressive disorder."

After he was released, he says he left home and lived on the streets. His life turned around when he met a social worker who got him into an assisted living facility and he got the right medication.

"I am now successful beyond my wildest dreams. I travel the world, ride around in limos, have only the most expensive clothing. I've come a long way from eating out of old pizza boxes on the streets," the author wrote.

    So, society has to pay...

He's done nothing to show he is deserving of healing. He's just another attention seeking emo narcissist that took his dominatrix homoeroticism and general disrespect for humanity way too far. He probably thinks he's clever and special because he posted a movie of it online (1 lunatic 1 ice pick) and everyone went mental calling it "the sickest viddy of all time" etc. Threads were started on random websites ranting about him and how evil he is and how in todays world no publicity is bad publicity. If he manages to stay on the run for a year he will probably have an internet fan base large enough to live off.

He did nothing groundbreaking other than "get famous" thanks to those hideous gore sites. Most of the notorious serial killers that he was supposedly obsessed with would no doubt have thought his juvenile and unimaginative antics puerile, were it not for the fact that some would no doubt admire the level of global butthurt he has caused.

Many executions are completely unwarranted, but in this case, my advice to society would be to find him and hang him, unceremoniously.

    @Sasha,

Who brought up this...angel? In what schools/ institutes /other social places he received education, advice, guidance?

I thought the same, until I watched -Funny Games-, this movie made me reconsider my point of view.

[...] The Schobers and the audience are asking the killers the same question: "Why are you doing this?" And all they get are ridiculous answers that cannot be taken seriously. Paul explains Peter's actions by referring to him as "a spoiled child tormented by ennui and world weariness, weighed down by the void of existence," at the same time winking directly at the camera.

The death penalty would deprive humanity of the opportunity to learn more from this strange creature. I mean, look at what we can learn about ourselves:

Dude identified as bisexual. All his personal relationships were heterosexual. Regarding his career in professional faggotry, he was strictly "gay-for-pay," meaning the dreaded homogay probably had little to do with his "general disrespect for humanity."

Oh yeah, im projecting, docking fan BW. How is it "projecting" when I call this guy a homoerotic dominatrix fantasist when he tied up a guy, murdered and dismembered him before raping his corpse. Please explain how that is "projecting"?

Projecting would be saying BWs are into that kind of thing and get off watching the video given half the chance...nah sorry, that would not be not projecting, that would be predicting....correctly.

    Dude identified as bisexual.

    Ok....

All his personal relationships were heterosexual.

    err...but didnt you just say:

    Dude identified as bisexual.

which must mean not all his personal relationships were heterosexual...because I mean he would actually know his own orientation better than a BW in a stinking hovel of a Beijing apartment, right?

Regarding his career in professional faggotry

    yeah?

    Dude identified as bisexual

oh..klol....so he was bisexual right? thanksk.

    he was strictly "gay-for-pay"

but wait..now arnt you are projecting, because:

    Dude identified as bisexual.

    Oh yeah, right, thanks.

the dreaded homogay probably had little to do with his "general disrespect for humanity."

Not sure what BW means by "the dreaded homogay", but I think I derived my perceptions of his general disrespect for humanity from the fact that he cut a mans limbs off and rubbed them on his genitals before beating off with the severed hand, raping the corpse and sodomizing it with a bottle... yeah.... thats where I got it. Im probably projecting tho...lol BW you sink to new lows.

I feel terribly sorry for the victim, he has been living openly as a gay in the conservative China and moved to Canada looking for love. If he remains a Chinese national, theoretically speaking, the Chinese Court has the jurisdiction over this criminal case too, which would enable Luka Rocco be deported to China to receive a death sentence, also, we can sell his kidneys for transplant on the market.

The murder has a traumatic childhood and has been living majorly as a rent boy, which led to his cruel abnormality. Technically speaking, there is no such thing as "bi-sexual". I would say he was born heterosexual but turned bi for complicated reasons. Controversy here, rather than racist, homosexuality or mental illness, should be focused on how the deranged people fo our society be treated (protection of children and minors from sex assult and domestic voilence, medical support for mental patients and civil rights for the homosexual etc), to prevent such tragedies.

This case reminds me of two movies: "In Cold Blood" & "8mm". Believe it or not, there are Heaven and Hell on our earth and when the two worlds collide, such things happen.

On a seperate note, with due respects, I think Chinese are the most stable race in general, while white people are somehow genetically more aggressive and destructive. Like our old men said: Alien race has alien hearts (非我族类,其心必异).

Now the arrest has put an end to this terrible tragedy. I would advice not to disseminate the video, cause from a religious point of view, such tapes contains the grudge of the dead and will contaiminate the viewers, believe it or not.

At last, hope the victim's soul rests in peace and sincere condolence to his family.
