Well, in my poor understanding here it means: 1.To be is to do: What one is, got to be the ability he or she can perform.Life is more about one got something to do(Skill, talent, gift)...
2.To be is to play: Play makes one have fun and joy. Without playing life would be miserable and meaningless not to say almost non-existent.
So from the author point of view, life is about ability and enjoyment.
Some people think we are defined by the stories we tell ourselves. (For example, our profile description on this website)
Some peole think we are defined by our actions. (.....Our online forum behavior on this website)
But since we know how to lie, act and pretend in front of others and ourselves, who knows who we really are and what we appear to be.
