If you like to go to Provence, I suggest you take a fly ticket to Paris, and then from there do :

Paris - Marseille by TGV train Explore from Marseille to Nice by little 'hops' ( Provence, Luberon, etc.. Best get a guidebook, depends on what you like) Then come back from Nice to Paris by TGV train again

Best time for lavanda to be in flowers.. April to end of May ( depends on seasons, this year was cold winter, so it might be late.. )
