They spent three years translating secret military documents, scouring the internet and studying satellite images for clues – and concluded that China may have as many as 3,000 missiles, compared with general estimates of between 80 and 400. The researchers at Georgetown University, led by a former senior Pentagon official, concentrated on a 3,000-mile network of tunnels dug largely in Sichuan province by the Chinese Second Artillery, a secretive unit responsible for protecting the country’s nuclear weapons.

In 2008, thousands of radiation technicians were sent to the region after it was hit by a huge earthquake. When TV pictures showed oddly collapsed hills across the province, officials eventually admitted there was a network of tunnels underneath, dubbing it their ‘Underground Great Wall’. The 363-page study, as yet unpublished, has been discussed in Congress and circulated among defence officials. It was commissioned as ‘homework’ by the students’ professor, Phillip Karber, a prominent Washington defence strategist during the Cold War.

‘It’s not quite a bombshell, but those thoughts and estimates are being checked against what people think they know based on classified information,’ said a defence department official. Critics have questioned the study’s use of internet research, including blogs and even a Chinese TV drama about artillerymen.

Nuclear analyst Gregory Kulacki said the tunnels might encourage the Chinese to have fewer rather than more missiles in the belief that they were better protected. Nuclear non-proliferation campaigners have also attacked the report, saying it will undermine efforts to reduce atomic weapon stockpiles. But Mark Stokes of the Project 2049 Institute, an international security think-tank, said the report highlighted ‘the uncertainty about what China has’.

Professor Karber said: ‘I don’t have the slightest idea how many nuclear weapons China really has, but neither does anyone else in the arms-control community. ‘That’s the problem with China – no one really knows except them.’ China has long been the most secretive of the five nuclear powers recognised by the international Non-Proliferation Treaty. While Russia and America have bilateral treaties that ensure their stockpiles are monitored, the Chinese have simply claimed they keep a small number of missiles for ‘minimum deterrence’.

The U.S. has 5,000 nuclear warheads, and Russia 8,000.

link text

Aside from the fact that it's just a conjecture and not really research, this begs the question: is that 3,000 hypothetical missiles armed with nuclear warheads, or just 3,000 hypothetical missiles ready to receive a nuclear payload? Because if these missiles are not fully armed with nuclear warheads, referring to empty delivery vehicles as "nuclear" weapons and then making a comparison to the US and Russia's stockpile of nuclear warheads is incredibly fucking deceptive.

But then again it's the Daily Mail, so who gives a cunt?

It's The Daily Hate, so basically it's a crock of shit. I mean, one of the images they used was that infamous photoshopped photo from Iran. Well done guys. Also:

Does it really matter how many if it's more then let's say 5 on each side? Sounds much like the beginning of the next "cold war". Now the US will step up it's efforts to stockpile even more to gain the advantage again. Perfect, just what the US needs, more $3000 toilet seats and hammers.... Thanks China

@Rick, I think "defensive" weapons like the ABM shield we've been building around Russia are making that Cold War II story into a reality more than China having some unaccounted for nukes buried (presumably for use after the surface of the Earth has already been wiped clean).

Beg your pardon, but ain't you ex-mil?

  • Rick (史大龙)

@Dando I am ex-mil (USMC). and you are right about the ABM shield, forgot about that.... I think the unaccounted nukes is most likely 10,000 and not only the presumed 3K, who else could build-em faster and cheaper then China? But not to worry I am sure the manufacturer skimped on something somewhere, changed the specs to save a buck and they won't fly past the fence! Haha I’m not worried.

  • Rick (史大龙)

@Godfather You're right so time to invade China, oh wait we already have sent the worlds finest English teachers here to really f*#K up the country! haha

@Rick, Right on. I find it difficult to even get worked up by North Korea or Iran holding nukes. Yeah, their leaders are "crazy" in that they are out of touch with reality, but not really "crazy" in the sense that they're more likely to blow the planet up than the folks who've been expecting the imminent return of the messiah for the last 2,000 years.

Anyway, it's good to know a soldier who knows where the truly wasteful spending is happening in the U.S. government.

With that said, I'd love to see Chinese university students produce news-worthy research on America's military. Not likely.

PLA academy hackers? In my satellite's vagina? It's more likely than you think.

Who really cares how many nuclear weapons the US, China or any other country in the world has. I have not been offered a place in one of the Nuclear Bunkers! If someone decided to press the button, I will be one of the many thousands of acceptable casualties of war? The only logical and safe way is the total ban world wide on nuclear weapons?

  • Rick (史大龙)

Nicole you can stay in my nuke bunker....

Pete Do you think I am being naive in my thinking. What happened to Russia insurance policy. Did it go broke? Look at the cost to the ordinary people keeping this so called insurance policy alive. The trillions that could have been saved since 1950. I have a view that there a few thousand people in this world who are elitist, they govern this world by money and power. The naive people who have to pay in the form of taxation or face large fines, imprisonment or both.
I also think that it wise in view of the TOS not to pursue this subject to deeply?

Rick I will bear your offer in mind.
