The wedding theme: "vintage colonialism". One of the guests:

Antique travel chests, clocks, globes and binoculars and an awesome Zebra skin. Dave and Chantal did it right. They hired actual colonial pieces from a prop-house that we put them in touch with in Pretoria. It was truly authentic.

Ah, South Africa! Remember the days when people called each other sir and ma'am, men greeted each other with a tip of the hat, and dark-skinned people weren't allowed to hold office in political institutions? Yeah, those were the days. Some of the images — like the large one above — are truly unsettling. The caption seems to be: Remember how great it used to be when our people oppressed brown people? Good times.

Is this insensitive and racist, or clever and ironic?

I'm going to go with insensitive and racist considering that South Africa is still a pretty insensitive and racist country in teh first place. I had a friend whose aunt used to live there but eventually moved back after her psyche started to dissolve and she started to inevitbly hate hersef because she would be inevitably, accidentally racist on a daily basis just through being white and higher up in the social hierarchy. One particularly good anecdote was her husband got a dog to attack the house because they lived in an area notorious for break-ins. It started snaring and snapping wildly at their black friend, which they thought was odd. Later, upon asking the trainer who sold the dog what to do, he said: "I train my dogs to attack black people, it's a much easier to results considering almost all break-ins are done by blacks". What he said isn't necessarily false either, and that's food for thought in itself.
