I made this suggeestion in one of the threads that were deleted somet time ago, and I think it's worth dedicating a thread to the idea.

I think this forum is in need of an active community moderator. Most of the topics here go off-the-rails pretty quickly, and especially during the recent drama of fake accounts and soap-boxes. And more than this, threads also become overtly negative incredibly quickly, and whilst I've sometimes contributed to this environment, it's still pretty irritating to read a thread that starts off innocent  or serious enough but quickly becomes an exercise in 'How many smart innuendoes can I fit into one post?'

It doesn't need to take up a significant portion of the admins work-load: I'm sure you could farm the relatively minor role of moderating the content of the forums out to users who'd be willing to do it for free. I also don't think the risk of empowering a bad moderator is particularly high as I think the forum already has a poor reputation (at least amongst the people I've met or know from this website). And I do think it would make a huge difference in establishing a better sense of community and encouraging more people to use the forums without the fear of being made fun of or ridiculed.

I'd be happy to do it, but I'm still actively endorsing DD, in spite of his 'hahaha'.

I'd also say the things that need moderating are:

    - Misplaced Threads (already mentioned)

    - Off-Topic advertisements

-Witch-hunt threads (threads inciting the community against one particular member)

-Extreme and Unnecessary Trolling (I realise this is pretty subjective and I am in favor of trolling as a useful form of negative reinforcement,  but as Adolfo mentioned above, it's not surprising that threads like 'Chinese women are sluts' are going to provoke people and turn ugly)

Anyway, I don't imagine having moderators is going to stop people posting stuff like this, but I do think being able to remove it faster will make some difference in encouraging new people to come onto the forum.

  • 叮噹叔叔 (令狐叮噹)

    ...

... based on what Dando has said, one of the main reasons many of the non Nonsense stuff got shelved into Nonsense was "laziness", because when a new thread is created, the default category is always "Nonsense", and no one seemed to be bothered to check or change it ...

    One possible fix:

... it is not difficult at all to make it a "must have" field" and then instead of giving it a default value, use something like and also a "pop up" (or an error message on the screen) to inform the user that no category has been selected ...

... however, seeing that there had been many cases of "lost forum threads" (or lost posts), the "time out" thing and/or the buffer might need to be looked at, otherwise, when the user should go back to select a category due to the prompt, but discovered that everything he/she wrote might have been lost ...and that's discouraging ...

Actually, a moderator should not be visable at all. The content we want to have deleted should just disapear silently with as little attention as possible..CHINA-STYLE..if the moderator is not able to do this, he have failed - and he/she are probably deleting content that should not have been deleted.

So...One possible outcome of this is that once the list of nominees are created, I will secretly hand one of them the "key" to become a moderator.

But Godfather can read the writing on the wall. That's exactly why I started this clusterfucking snowball of fail by nominating Dingdang.

What would we do without these insights? Now I really wish I took your advice seriously, Godfather. Your perception of reality is so unique!

The people here that are going on about censorship and wanting the freedom to post stupid shit seem to be posting under the assumption that having moderators on a discussion board is an unusual thing. And yet every major discussion board I can think of employs moderators, and as much as I hate the flimsy logic behind this argument: if having a moderator is the norm, surely that might indicate something?

Blatently insulting posts are exactly what make this forum so interesting. I would also vote to allow any racism to stay, because it only reveals which users are bigots.

The problem with this is the cost you pay for it. Sure, if you're into random trolling and come here purely to make fun of people, then obviously the status quo would work for you. However you could just as easily log onto somewhere like yahoo chat, join a Christian chat room, proclaim yourself the new Messiah and watch the hate roll.

The extreme trolling that goes on here isn't really conducive to community building. Maybe I've just spoken to particularly bitter people, but most of the times I've mentioned this forum offline to WLIB members, the feedback was pretty negative. I think removing the racism, witch-hunting and bigotry would make the forum more accessible and encourage more users to participate.

Now, if you own this site, who do you want to appeal to? Where's your growth market? That's right -- the Chinese.

Full of gossip and slander (and written in Chinese), that socalled 'witch-hunt" thread was a priceless free advertisement for this website -- distinguishing it as a place where Chinese netizens can come to both meet, fuck and slander foreigners in their own language. Deleting that thread was an amateur, reactionary move made by fools who don't know their own business.

You are very wrong. Our business is not to earn money on weliveinbeijing, but to sell licenses to companies and organizations who wants to run a website on our platform (AppLaunch platform), the very same platform that weliveinbeijing is built on top of.

And as weliveinbeijing is a relatively okay show-case for potential customers we want the content on this site to be a little bit "cuter" than what sometimes this forum are. It`s nice to have a lot of members, but that isn`t really what drives our business.
