Stout. Guinness is okay (as long as it's not that awful Foreign Extra shit in a bottle), but Cooper's and Young's Double Chocolate Stout are even better. In this last month I've spent in Michigan, I've had at least six different kinds of stout from the local microbreweries. Oatmeal and cream stouts taste nice, but there's nothing quite like a nice imperial stout to begin a night of serious boozification.

I'm a dark, bitter, complicated person and I like dark, bitter, complicated beer.

Guiness is absolutely awful unless it's really, really fresh. That only happens if you're near Dublin. It has to have the worst shelf life of any beer ever, and that's including other stouts. I mean, you can't even get a good Guiness in Belfast.

Stouts are magical, magical beers though. It's a shame that Guiness has basically cornered the market in the UK so if you want one you're going to have to go microbrewery.

@Kieran, "Guiness has basically cornered the market in the UK" What about Beamish? I only had it once and I can't really remark on it, but someone told me Irish folks consider it more popular (or more authentic) than Guiness.

Anyway, that's a bummer. I always assumed that there were far more options on the other side of the Atlantic, as the impression that Americans have is that all beer is lager.
