There is a lingo in the dialect that literally means “people from the countryside,” and it is said that older generations of Shanghainese apply this phrase to most visitors.

In Beijing, money alone just can’t get its way; power trumps it. Though Beijing and Shanghai, both as international metropolises, are land of opportunities for people in the rest of China, Shanghai is ideal for self-made men from scratch, and Beijing is less so, because people believe it is harder to climb the social ladder there if you don’t have connections.

I think the biggest and best example is the World Expo. I took it as an attempt to up stage the expo. The problem was nobody who wasn't already in China anyway cared.

upstage the olympics you mean no? I've come accross more anti-老外 and anti-外地 sentiment among the 老北京ers. but then, i have lived here longer, plus i can't understand that awful language that is 上海话

Hahahaha ... GodFather, not that I would like to indulge you, but for this occassion, I will "borrow" your own words:

"S/he that lives in glass house should not throw stone"

... I am sure you have your own "dialect", so do feel free to express yourself using any language as you please, someone might respond to you :)

  • 叮噹叔叔 (令狐叮噹)

    ...

Hahahaha ... GodFather ... interesting to know that there are 39 thousand plus languages and dialects, but more interestingly, you have decided not to learn Chinese while you are here, but then, my Mandarin is probably not much better than yours ...

Just to clarify, since you seem to care so much, choice of using any language and/or dialect is part of what it means to have freedom, something you could try to be more familiar with, however, it also needs to be done out of habit and reason ... so as rude as it might seem to you for Ami to have (suddenly) changed channel, there is no major reason she cannot either ...

I am only sorry that you feel that way ...

  • 叮噹叔叔 (令狐叮噹)

    。。。

    哈哈哈哈,Ami,真的很失礼,没有读过鲁迅!:)

  • 叮噹叔叔 (令狐叮噹)

    。。。

    哈哈哈哈,你是说这个“肚兜”的嘛?我回头给这些大小狼,和女孩子们,再找一些更“喷血”的!
