Christmas is a religious holiday.  Jews, Muslim don't celebrate this holiday.  Are we all believing Jesus?!

I thought that this is a simple but important family holiday.  How do Christmas become a 中国特色的 crazy party holiday?

Hahahaha ... because (some) Chinese wanted to be more western-friendly, so that they can write that in their CV when looking for work:

    "...

    Specialized area: Christmas carols

Self-Analysis: cheerful, big smiles, love to sing

    ... "

I agree that Christmas is (traditionally) religious holiday, but over the years, I felt that it had become more family-oriented, and had grown out of the religion ... yes, maybe becoming more commercialised has something to do with it ...

Or, like someone had said in another thread, just an excuse to party ...

Hahahaha ... yes, but the "atmosphere" in Beijing is too commercial and there's too little creative decorations, so we will just go out to dinner, maybe see a movie ...

As for "shut down", when I first went to Brisbane, it was a complete shocker, everything (including supermarket, but except fast food places and cinemas) is closed every Saturday afternoon, Sunday, and of course New Year, Xmas, Easter, Anzac Day etc, and with that little bit that they called CBD, it felt more like a ghost town...

... but that's why Christmas is about family (in the west) ... because there is no where to go, except home, heehee ... just kidding!!

actually, originally christmas isnt a christian event at all. At the time when the Christianity started to expand to whole Europe, they also adopted many influence customs and festivals of the "pagan" ppl. And christmas happened to be the Mid Winter Festival, shortly after the winter solstice. Some even say that 24th Dec. used to be the new year's day according to an ancient celtic 13-month-and-a-day calendar. On that day, ppl used to build big wheels out of fir limbs, enflammed it and had it rolling downhills. I dont know when or why exactly the christian Church came up with the idea to have 25th Dec. to be the birth day of Jesus, Jesus wasnt even born that day!

well, since it all doesnt make much sense, since it is just a festival of what reason ever, why not celebrate? It is at the end of the year, it is cold in winter and boring, why not hook up with friends and family folks and have a nice time together. Christians or not.

    amen :)

Christmas isn't just about fun. It's deadly serious. Haven't you heard? There's a WAR on Christmas. You have to choose a fucking side. You can't just go to an office party, have cookies, and exchange presents without going to church on Christmas Eve.

If you do that, Santa will put you on the naughty list and put his jolly red balls in your mouth while you sleep.

You people are like the kids who eat all the advent calendar chocolates without reading the story about how Jesus was born on the set of a hardcore bestiality porno flick. You don't understand the True Meaning of Christmas. Fucking poseurs.

Xmas is just a pagan festival, Christmas is a combined word from latin, Christ mas

Christ is Jesus' name and mas is a latin word which mean religious ceremony. This holiday was fabricated by the catholic Church with a conventional date Dec 25. They came up with this date because it seems many great people were born on this day and conventionaly they decided on this day.

No one really knows when Jesus was born, and that makes even the year we are today (2010) not an exact year. It seems that Jesus was born one or two year befor year 0. Remember when the astronauts went to Jerusalem to see the King Herod and tell him they came into his Kingdom to pay their respect to the King of Kings, He told them to come back and tell him where the Messiah was, they didn't come back to him to tell him because he had  wanted to kill him. As they didn't come back to him, King Herod was furious and ordered to kill all the boys under 2 years old. Why so? because no one knew when the Messiah, Jesus was born.

But, for true Christian, what is much important is not the birth of Jesus, but His death. He came to redeem humankind, he can to die so that humankind could be saved.

But Xmas unfortunately doesn't even have anything much connected to Christ in today, we often o to bars, we drink and on 25 we are drunk and sleeping, it's just a day of Fun after all.

@Mr Incredible, Igbo boy, you've got to know that you are coming from a country which has back ground and it's easy for you to know more about Xmas, but for our fellow Chinese who never been in touch with Christianity, they've got lot of questions which for you could qualify stupid but very pertinent for them. So please, it's good to explain if you can...

Hahahahaha ... Ami Li ... I suggest you join a church, or just go caroling with your friends, if you have not done this before, it might be a refreshing experience for you :)

Think about it, Chinese New Year (i.e. Spring Festival) would have been really boring in San Fran or, similarly, most major cities in Australia, if it was 20 years ago ...

Not sure why, but it seems "fair", hahaha ...
