The two had written to Carla Bruni-Sarkozy asserting their innocence and asking her to intervene.

"It's thanks to her that we are here," 20-year-old Celine Faye said of Bruni-Sarkozy on television, standing next to her friend and fellow inmate 19-year-old Sarah Zaknoun.

The two were pardoned by Dominican President Leonel Fernandez, having been sentenced to jail in 2008 after six kg of cocaine were discovered in their luggage. They said the drug had been placed there without their knowledge.

Tuesday, they were handed over to French diplomats who were expected to take them to Paris Wednesday.

Bruni-Sarkozy, whose journey from model to singer-songwriter to first lady has been a favourite with French glossy magazines, has publicly said she has no interest in politics.

But her foray into diplomacy evoked a headline-grabbing mission by Sarkozy's ex-wife Cecilia, who visited Libya in 2007 to secure the release of five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death for allegedly infecting children with HIV.
