Sino-CES 2009 Highlights

Ah, Beijing – it’s great to be back.

I had intended to write about Sino-CES 2009 on the return trip from Qingdao, but because of how I ended up being seated during the nearly 6-hour long train ride, I had limited options.

 

Needless to say, since it was hard enough to find a spot for my roller -- much less prop up my Macbook -- I had to wait until today to give you the inside scoop on the show.

Big names, even bigger stunts

The A-level companies that did exhibit at Sino-CES made a grand showing with their towering, well-lit arenas. Names like Hisense, Lenovo, Samsung and China Mobile led packed audiences with live music, product demos, and in some cases, six-foot-tall, high-heeled "brand ambassadors" (see the end of the column). 

Attendees were often greeted with prizes, photo ops, brochures and as Qingdao-based Haier Group proudly displayed, two inflatable mascot suits with built-in mini-fan units.

 

According to Sino-CES, this year’s show brought more than 450 domestic and foreign exhibitors, over 700 buyers, hundreds of high-level government enterprises, nearly 9 million visitors and 300 new product-launches.

Amidst all the fun and fanfare, here are three devices that you may want to keep an eye on in the near future:

1. Hisense 3G EVDO Mobile Phone

 

Hisense, one of the leading household electronics brands in the Chinese market today, led Sino-CES with the largest exhibit of all. 

Their all-new 3G touch-screen smartphone made an appearance, and my initial feeling is that it’ll be a serious contender for the BlackBerry/iPhone/Pre market.

Running on Windows Mobile 6.1 o/s, the phone features Internet, GPS, a 3-megapixel camera, force feedback and even comes equipped with a stylus.

It’s the Qingdao-based electronics maker’s first 3G CDMA 2000 EVDO phone, making it the perfect choice for all you China Telecom users out there. 

2. Lenovo Thinkpad W700ds

 

Lenovo is betting big this year, literally. Meet the Lenovo Thinkpad W700ds.

Weighing at over five kgs, it’s the heaviest of Lenovo’s showcased laptops, though it does pack a wallop when it comes down to features.

Running on a quad-core 2.53 GHz Intel Core Extreme 2 processor, the W700ds I tested came equipped with 8 GB of DDR3 RAM (upgradable to 10 GB), 3x 320 GB hard drives, 5 USB drives, a nVIDIA Quadro FX 3700M 1 GB graphics card, a 4.7x3.2 stylus pad, a BluRay drive, and its innovative, push-in, slide-out 10.6” WXGA monitor.

This mobile powerhouse is not for the faint-hearted; pricing is said to be around 89,000 RMB.

No word on battery life, folks, but it’s safe to say this beast may need enough juice to power a small 胡同.

3. Samsung Anycall I6320C TV Phone

Of all the competition in the TV phone market today (think Tony Stark’s LG VX9400 from Iron Man), the Samsung Anycall I6320C is one of the few phones that delivers on a rich, lag-free, mobile TV experience.

Released back in late-June, the I6320C is fitted for China Mobile’s CMMB TV network and comes with one complimentary, ready-to-watch news channel straight out of the box.

Amazingly, the 2.6-in QVGA-screen, TD-HSPA/EDGE-compatible phone had a flawless connection to the CMMB network with virtually no lag. Compared to the other TV phones I tested at Sino-CES, this one came out on top in picture clarity, loading speed, and connection quality.

Other features include a 3-megapixel camera and a slide-out keypad.

Pricing is set around 3,980 RMB.

Last Thoughts

Overall, the show went fine. Not only did I have the chance to preview some of the newest techs ready to hit the market but, at the same time, savor a bit of Lenovo’s scenery. :)
