STAGE

Directed by Lai Shengchuan, who is also the playwright, comedy drama The Peach Blossom Land is being restaged by the National Theater Company of China and Taipei Performance Workshop. The play, which debuted in 2006, is said to be a "drama within a drama", focusing on a dramatic meeting of the past and present between a poor couple.

The puppet show Real and Fake Monkey King by the China Puppet Theater Company, is adapted from the novel Journey to the West. Since its debut in 1991, the show has been staged nearly 1,000 times. Audiences can enjoy the magic skills of the Monkey King, the elegant dance of the fairy maids, and the wonderland in heaven and the sea.

The Peony Pavilion, the classic Kunqu Opera, is on at the Imperial Granary, a perfect venue. The Imperial Granary was rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty 600 years ago, exactly the time the Kunqu Opera was written.

CONCERTS

The Beijing Symphony Orchestra Concert, which was founded by composer Tan Lihua in 1977, presents its classic performance of Chinese music. The program includes Lu Qiming's Ode to the Red Flag, Xiao Youmei's New Raiment of Rainbow and Feather Dance, Huang Anlun's Dance at North Frontier, Huang Zi's Overture to Nostalgia, Liu Yuan's Train Toccata and Fang Kejie's Raba Dance.

The traditional instrument orchestra of the China National Opera and Dance Drama Company is ushering in the spring season with two concerts. The orchestra's seasonal celebration has a classic repertoire, including Jasmine Flower and Two Springs Reflect the Moon.

Exhibitions

In his series, The Flowing Pen, Choi Kin-yue uses pen and ink to breathe life into natural landscapes. Using techniques of sketching, gouache, inks and oils, Choi makes full use of lines and curves to capture the texture and nuances of his subjects.

His works show the unconventional composition of ink paintings, the realistic approach of oil paintings, the rich color scheme of gouache, and the vein structure of sketches.

Born in 1943 in Fujian province, Choi graduated from Fujian Normal University in 1966, with a major in fine arts.

A group exhibition with video works from 10 artists is being presented, and the participants will give a series of lectures. Artist Sun Xun will be the first to introduce his works. Sun's main oeuvre consists of a series of animated films in black and white, in which he explores how history is constructed and narrated.
