In Solitude, Swapping Guitars for Palettes

If you like your modern art with a side of indie rock, you'd do well in checking out this Sunday's hybrid exposition, "2nd Mary Inn" (满瑞斋), organized by the China International Gallery Exposition (CIGE).

"Most people won't associate rock and roll music with art," said event publicist Sophie Li in an email message. "Good art and rock music all come from solitude and love towards humanity," she added, explaining that the three young founders of Mary Inn (whose name is a hybrid of traditional Confucian prose and one of the English language's most common names) joined forces over their desire to showcase these values, catalyzed, in part, by "cheap local beer."

This exposition, the series' second (the first took place last autumn at MAO Live House and featured video and mixed media) is presented with help from CAE Media.

Sunday's event at Yugong Yishan primarily showcases oil paintings and photography created by an impressive roster of accomplished local musicians, including works from Tang Dynasty's Ding Wu, New Beijing Sound Movement pioneer Zuoxiao Zuzhou, disco-punk legends New Pants' Peng Lei & Pang Kuan (the latter is pictured above), Lei Lin from Lei Lin and Six Gurgoyles, the Gar's Zhan Pan, Casino Demon bassist Liu Yang and former Hang on the Box and current Girl Kill Girl founder Gia.

"It doesn't matter if you're creating something visual or auditory," wrote Gia in an email message. "In both, you absorb and extract the feeling. Sensitive artists can always make the beauty of life more colorful, more pure and more extreme," remarked the singer who will display a series of recent oil paintings. "When you do that, you become happy and also glad to share these extremes and purity with others."

Seeing as this isn't your garden variety champagne-sipping art soiree, the entertainment isn't, either.

Expect live performances by pop rockers Lei Lin and Six Gurgoyles, Scissors of Li Yuan, hardcore act Cerebral Concussion, Yang Tao, Golden Driver, Girl Kill Girl, a solo set by the Gar's Zhan Pan -- as well an appearance from the Mary Inn gentlemen themselves.

More information (中文) on Mary Inn can be found here.
